These have included She Fest, the only free LGBT woman-centered event in Southern California, and Orgullo Sin Fronteras (Binational LGBTQ Conference), the first conference to bring LGBT organizers on both sides of the border together for community collaboration.Ĭesar Chavez was once asked by an aspiring young organizer, 'How do you organize?' He said, 'First, you talk to one person, face to face, then you talk to another…' 'But, Cesar,' the impatient youth interrupted, 'how do you really get them involved?' Chavez replied,'First, you talk to one person, face to face, and then you talk to the next and then the next…." At San Diego Pride, we believe that our method of strategic volunteer engagement not only strengthens the engaged individuals, but also positively impacts the wider community by developing a cadre of confident leaders who can confidently work together to tackle complex community issues.Īs one of Southern California’s oldest LGBT-serving nonprofits, San Diego LGBT Pride has distinguished itself as a year-round resource for LGBT individuals seeking community engagement opportunities and leadership development.

In addition, our volunteers have produced a host of unique public events. This volunteer-led programming has included innovative projects like our Pride Youth Leadership Academy (which is led by Youth Ambassadors), a Pride Accessibility Team (organized by LGBT community members living with disabilities), our Pride Military Department advocating for LGBT service members year-round, and our LGBTQ Latinx and API Coalitions. This innovative structure allows community members who have lived experience with issues a greater voice in determining what programmatic outcomes should be. Projects are monitored and supported by staff, but designed and led by Pride-trained community volunteers. This programming is based on feedback from representatives of the community themselves, who are experts on their own needs. San Diego Pride has developed a cadre of supportive programs based on the grassroots movement-building "Pathway to Leadership" theory to help connect, empower, and organize the most marginalized LGBTQ community members who live at the intersections of multiple identities. Because the LGBTQ community is diverse, with many people living at the intersection of multiple forms of prejudice, programmatic excellence means creating meaningful experiences and opportunities at Pride for all people to celebrate who they are and celebrate each other. Our events and their content strive to reflect the lives of people across the spectrum of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, age, faith, physical ability, income level, and health. There are areas for LGBTQ families, women’s health, HIV testing, teens, and a sobriety village for people in recovery. Our accessibility team offers wheelchairs, ASL services, and a braille/tactile festival map. Last year, Pride’s two-day Music Festival was attended by over 40,000 individuals and comprised of entertainment zones including our main stage, Latino stage, Hip-Hop stage, Electronic Dance Music stage, and a major “Art of Pride” visual art exhibit. In 2015, the San Diego Pride Parade became the first and only parade to host an LGBTQ youth marching band, bringing in youth from across Southern California to perform in an environment that celebrates their talent and honors their identity. San Diego Pride has the distinction of being the first Pride in the nation to host a children’s garden, one of the first to have areas specific to LGBTQ seniors and their care, and holds the honor of being the first Pride in the nation to allow service members to march in uniform.

From a small 1974 protest with a few dozen people marching through the streets of downtown San Diego, Pride has expanded from Hillcrest, the historically LGBTQ neighborhood, to an event that draws from all across the region.
